Recycling Just Got Simpler (and Maybe More Effective?): Introducing Single-Stream!

  |     |   ESG

Exciting news, residents! Recycling is about to get a lot less, well, sorting-intensive. Many of our communities across the country are making the switch to single-stream recycling, meaning you can toss all your paper, plastic, metal, and glass into one convenient bin. No more juggling separate containers or deciphering cryptic recycling symbols!

But wait, is single-stream all sunshine and rainbows? The jury's still out on its overall effectiveness. While it undeniably boosts convenience and often increases recycling rates, it also comes with challenges. Sorting mixed materials at a central facility (the MRF) can be tricky, and contamination with non-recyclables can throw a wrench in the whole process.

So, where do we stand? Well, in places like Denver, Minneapolis, and St. Paul, single-stream has been around for a while, and while not perfect, it's generally considered a step in the right direction. They've invested in high-tech sorting equipment and waste education campaigns, leading to some impressive recycling rates. On the other hand, some smaller communities are just dipping their toes into single-stream waters, so it's a bit too early to tell how effective it will be in the long run.

But one thing's for sure: we can all help single-stream succeed! Here's how:

  • Rinse and dry: Sticky soda bottles and greasy pizza boxes are a big no-no in the single-stream bin. Give your recyclables a quick rinse and squish to make the sorting process smoother.
  • Know your guidelines: Every community has its own quirks when it comes to single-stream. Check the posted rules or ask your friendly community manager what belongs and what doesn't. Remember, plastic bags and food scraps still belong in the trash!
  • Spread the word: Share these tips with your neighbors! The more informed we are, the less contamination there will be, and the more effective single-stream can be.
  • Stay informed: Keep an eye out for updates and educational materials from your community about single-stream. The more we understand, the better we can make it work!

Single-stream isn't a magic bullet, but it's a promising step towards a more sustainable future. By working together, we can make the most of this convenient system and give our recyclables the second life they deserve. So, grab your single-stream bin, remember these tips, and let's get sorting!

Bonus: Can't wait to find out if your community is going single-stream? Check out the list on our website here or ask your community manager directly! They're always happy to answer your recycling questions.

Together, let's sort smarter, not harder, and make single-stream a success!
