Beyond the Blue Bin: Disposing Hazardous and E-Waste

  |     |   ESG

We all love the satisfaction of tossing plastic bottles and newspapers into the recycling bin, but what about all the forgotten things just sitting around like batteries, or old small appliances? This guide will help you dispose of them in a responsible, eco-friendly manner, no matter where you reside.

Hazardous Items:

  • Cleaners and Beyond: Many cities hold annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection days – check your city's website or waste hauler for dates and locations. Some offer permanent drop-off centers too!
  • Batteries: Look for designated retailers like Ace Hardware or Home Depot, or collection bins in libraries or grocery stores. Many cities like Minneapolis and Denver offer convenient drop-off options.

Electronics:

  • Help your old TVs and laptops avoid ending up in a landfill. Many cities offer curbside e-waste collection. Alternatively, check out retailers like Best Buy and Staples participating in e-cycle programs.
  • Explore your DIY Disposal options. Some areas, like Isanti, Minnesota, hold annual HHW events where you can say goodbye to your e-waste. For bigger pieces, consider contacting your waste hauler for special pick-up arrangements.

Remember: Never toss hazardous or electronic waste in the regular trash or down the drain! Doing this is harmful to the environment and potentially hazardous to your health.

Resources to Help:

Bonus Tip: Prevent waste before it's created! Opt for rechargeable batteries, reusable cleaning products, and consider repairing electronics instead of replacing them. Every little bit helps reduce the burden on our landfills and protects our planet.

Remember, the specific requirements and resources will vary depending on your city. Always check your local regulations and contact your waste hauler for the latest information. Together, we can make a difference!
